Supporting the UN Mission in Kosovo*

Through the Support to Rule of Law and Justice Programme, UNOPS is providing a variety of services to the UN mission to advance rule of law, build institutional capacity and improve living and working conditions for officers and detainees. 

Below is a snapshot of some of our work ...

Strengthening correctional services and improving living conditions

While prison conditions vary widely among Kosovo's correctional establishments, meaningful activities for inmates such as work and other rehabilitative programmes remain rare.

To promote self-sustained and meaningful activities for inmates, UNOPS procured bakery equipment for the Lipjan Correctional Centre for Women and Juveniles. The centre’s bakery not only provides fresh bread and baked goods daily – it's also providing the skills women and youth can use to find future employment, supporting their reintegration into society.

Improving community safety

UNOPS is providing support to enhance the security sector and support criminal investigations. Studies indicate that municipal level activities are some of the most effective access points for improving security, dialogue and building trust among communities.

To help increase safety in Vitia and Rahovec Municipality, UNOPS procured and installed CCTV cameras and a workstation to improve security and safety and protect the most vulnerable members of society, including women, children, minorities and the elderly.

UN Mission in Kosovo*

Since 1999, the UN Mission in Kosovo has worked to promote security, stability and respect for human rights in the country and throughout the region.

UNOPS office in Pristina has worked with UNMIK for several years. Together, we work to improve Kosovo’s institutional capacity, rehabilitate government facilities, strengthen rule of law, and most recently, improve the health and socio-economic outcomes of the COVID-19 pandemic.”
