Statement by UNOPS Executive Director
Statement by Jorge Moreira da Silva, UN Under-Secretary-General and UNOPS Executive Director, on the Secretary-General’s assignment of UNOPS support to the Office of the Senior Humanitarian and Reconstruction Coordinator for Gaza.
Following the recent approval of Security Council Resolution 2720 on the ongoing Gaza crisis, the UN Secretary-General has appointed Ms Sigrid Kaag of the Netherlands as Senior Humanitarian and Reconstruction Coordinator for Gaza.
The Secretary-General also decided to task UNOPS with the responsibility of supporting the full operationalization of the Office of Senior Humanitarian and Reconstruction Coordinator for Gaza and the establishment of the UN mechanism to facilitate, coordinate, monitor and verify humanitarian relief consignments to Gaza.
I would like to congratulate Sigrid Kaag for this very important appointment and express our willingness to support her in this crucial task.
I also want to thank the Secretary-General for allocating to UNOPS this critical mission to accelerate humanitarian relief efforts.
