Expanding access to renewable energy is critical for sustainable development and resilience against climate change. In Africa, this shift is essential to improve energy accessibility, stimulate green industries, and promote economic stability. The Accelerated Partnerships for Renewable Energy in Africa (APRA) is a collaborative initiative between African governments and international stakeholders, aiming to accelerate renewable energy adoption. Launched at the Africa Climate Summit in Nairobi in September 2023, APRA aims to address the urgent need for cleaner, resilient energy systems across the continent.

At COP29, Germany unveiled plans to establish an implementation office for APRA based in Nairobi, which will be supported by UNOPS. In close collaboration with the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), UNOPS will provide operational support to ensure APRA, which will remain Africa-led, can meet its goals. This partnership builds on UNOPS experience with the Santiago Network, an initiative co-hosted by UNOPS and the UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) that aims to connect vulnerable developing countries with the technical assistance needed to address climate-related loss and damage.

“Through APRA, UNOPS is supporting African nations in attracting financial investments towards the green transition, ultimately, creating jobs, advancing green industrialization, and improving livelihoods,” said UNOPS Africa Regional Director Dalila Gonçalves.

“We are committed to sustainable development in Africa and tackling climate change by enhancing governments’ implementation capacity.

“With our experience, we can help accelerate the uptake of renewable energy across the continent.”
