"Small Island Developing States in the Pacific and elsewhere have a significant stake in the health and well-being of the ocean, seas and marine life," said UNOPS Executive Director, Grete Faremo.

"Through this new agreement, UNOPS will play a strong role in developing resilient infrastructure projects in support of coastal communities in the country."

On behalf of President Baron Waqa, Her Excellency Ambassador Marlene Inemwin Moses, Permanent Representative of Nauru to the United Nations, spoke of UNOPS track record in building and managing wastewater and solid waste infrastructure projects that help to alleviate the influx of land-based pollution into the sea.

"We look forward to working with UNOPS as a strategic adviser in the design and implementation of investable infrastructure deals with an emphasis on port facilities for our country," stated Ambassador Moses.

"We are also keen to see how we can further engage in educational and awareness programmes in our communities through UNOPS partnership," she added. "Ensuring long-term sustainability of our surrounding ocean is the responsibility of all, but is entrusted in our young people."
