In Ecuador, women – who represent more than half of the population* – are increasingly entering the labour market and prioritizing their health and education.

In several public sectors, however, there are gaps and structural barriers that prevent the full participation of women, girls and vulnerable populations.

To help establish conditions that allow people to meet their basic needs and participate equally in society, UNOPS and UN Women signed an agreement to develop initiatives that directly benefit women, girls and vulnerable populations, and help strengthen the capacities of national institutions. The initiatives will contribute to closing gender gaps in the Andean country.

“Our focus goes beyond building infrastructure. It focuses on building a sustainable future where all people – regardless of their gender, race, age or other characteristic – have the opportunity to progress, improve their current quality of life and expand their autonomy,” said Mónica Siles, Director of UNOPS Multi-Country Office in Peru.

Working hand in hand with UN Women, we aim to ensure that each project reflects our commitment to equality, inclusion and social justice.

The alliance, called 'Building a diverse and inclusive future in Ecuador,' will help national and local administrations incorporate a gender perspective in public procurement and design plans in sectors such as infrastructure, health, transportation, education, justice and environment. This will allow each project to consider and address the specific needs and priorities of women, girls and vulnerable groups, promoting safer, more accessible and equitable environments for all.

“With this agreement, we seek to show how the gender perspective can be a catalyst for equality, the empowerment of women and girls, and the strengthening of communities,” said Ana Elena Badilla, Representative of UN Women in Ecuador.

“Incorporating the gender approach promotes inclusive and sustainable development aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals and the 2030 Agenda,” she added.

UN Women – through its specialized focus on promoting the rights of women and girls and gender equality – brings vast experience and knowledge in the field. UNOPS – with a track record in infrastructure, procurement and project management – brings its technical and operational capabilities.

The alliance consolidates the efforts of both UN agencies to support Ecuadorian institutions at national and local levels. It demonstrates a joint commitment to helping the country achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and building safer, more stable and fairer societies for all.
