UNOPS and the Government of Japan support demining in Ukraine
With funding from Japan, a project is addressing an urgent need to replace the State Emergency Service of Ukraine’s obsolete demining equipment.
"We are very grateful to the Government of Japan and UNOPS for helping us handle demining and saving civilians' lives," said Arsen Avakov, Ukraine's Minister of Interior.
To help increase the efficiency of the country's demining process, the Government of Japan worked with UNOPS to purchase vehicles and ground-penetrating radar detectors, worth more than $200,000.
"With this donation from the people of Japan, we expect that the suffering of people in the affected areas will decrease," said H. E. Shigeki Sumi, Ambassador of Japan.
The vehicles will be used to transport demining staff and equipment in the regions of Volyn, Zaporozhye, Odessa and Kherson. The radar detectors – capable of detecting explosive objects with little or no metal – will improve humanitarian demining in the regions of Donetsk and Luhansk.
"This demining equipment is among the best of its kind and should help provide security for civilians," said UNOPS Ukraine Head of Programme Sergei Volkov.
