New agreement with the Government of Germany to support vulnerable people in Jordan
A new 10 million Euro grant from the Government of Germany’s development bank, KfW, will fund a school maintenance project, providing valuable opportunities for vulnerable Jordanian citizens and Syrian refugees.
“This new project complements our joint activities with the Government of Jordan and will contribute to the improvement of learning conditions through the provision of basic maintenance and cleaning to public schools,” said Mr. Christian Schaub, KfW’s Country Director for Jordan.
The project will be implemented by UNOPS, working in close collaboration with KfW and Jordan’s Ministries of Education, Labour, and Social Development, as well as school authorities. It will focus on schools located in Amman, Irbid, Mafraq, Balqa, Ajloun and Ma’an Governorates, in communities that host the highest number of refugees.
“We look forward to implementing this project together with our partners, for the benefit of those most in need across Jordan,” said Bana Kaloti, UNOPS Director for the Middle East.
The project aims to address poverty and unemployment by enhancing access to longer-term employment opportunities through training and hands-on experience. At least 20 per cent of project participants will be women, with around 4,000 short-term cash-for-work opportunities to be created.
UNOPS has been supporting the Government of Jordan’s response to the Syrian refugee crisis since 2013.
