UNOPS and Saint Lucia pave way for future collaboration

On the side lines of the UN Ocean Conference in New York this week, a new agreement signed today signals the beginning of joint work on development projects in the Caribbean country.

"We look forward to further applying our institutional knowledge in support of the Sustainable Development Goals in Saint Lucia, while also expanding opportunities for socially responsible investments in the country," said UNOPS Executive Director, Grete Faremo.

On behalf of Prime Minister Allen Chastanet, the Honourable Dr. Gale T.C. Rigobert, Minister for Education, Innovation, Gender Relations and Sustainable Development, expressed her appreciation for the support UNOPS has provided to Saint Lucia in its mandated areas: project and contract management, procurement and infrastructure development. She cited UNOPS work in designing and constructing an integrated water supply system for 10,000 people, as well as renovating hospitals.

"We are excited about the prospect of now engaging UNOPS as a strategic adviser in structuring investable deals, in particular in the fields of renewable energy and social housing, and subsequently in bringing to bear UNOPS contract management expertise," said Dr. Rigobert. "We are equally delighted that, through its partnership with We Are The Oceans (WATO), UNOPS leads the way in tackling the issue of sensitizing new generations to the need to clean the oceans from plastic pollutants," she added.
