Sweden contributes $43 million to UNOPS-managed Access to Health Fund in Myanmar
Although healthcare has improved in Myanmar in recent years, the most vulnerable people still lack basic maternity and child healthcare, as well as healthcare for tuberculosis, HIV and malaria.
“For many people in Myanmar, simply accessing healthcare in the first place can be difficult,” said Andrew Kirkwood, UNOPS Director in Myanmar.
“Sweden’s contribution towards the Fund will help strengthen the national health system in Myanmar, and provide vulnerable groups with access to quality health services,” he said.
Managed by UNOPS, the $215 million Access to Health Fund will build on the work undertaken by the Three Millennium Development Goal Fund, which is set to end next month.
The Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) has pledged to continue supporting Myanmar’s health sector with their contribution to the new programme, emphasizing the importance of gender equality and reproductive health.
“The Access to Health Fund will help to improve healthcare for groups who currently have limited access to health services, and has a strong focus on gender equality. Sida’s support for the Fund is a natural fit,” said Nikolaj Gilbert, UNOPS Director of Partnerships.
The Access to Health Fund is also supported by the governments of Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States.
