The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS)
Supporting sustainable development throughout Serbia
With support from the European Union (EU), UNOPS is piloting a €10 million local development initiative through projects in 30 local governments in Serbia.
The goal is to maximize the resources in local areas, solve common problems, and encourage cooperation between larger cities and small towns. The projects will bring together local people, businesses, and community groups.
UNOPS is implementing 18 projects under this initiative, aiming to foster cooperation and development within local governments. The projects, selected through a public call conducted by the EU PRO Plus programme, were chosen from 22 applications after thorough evaluations and field visits. These projects are designed to improve various sectors, including tourism, waste management, social inclusion, and education.
"Through projects like these, we show that we are a credible partner and demonstrate how successful Serbia is in European integration. We have learned a lot; we know how to write projects and secure funds and investors," said Minister of European Integration Tanja Miščević.
This initiative has already shown promising results. For example, the visitor and educational centre, Risovača Cave, will be built in Arandjelovac, the King's Winery in Topola will be reconstructed, and the Petrovi Dvori complex in Višec near Rača, along with the cultural centre in Knić, will be renovated. These projects are expected to boost local tourism and the economy.
With support for the development of this territory, tourism potential will be activated, the number of tourists will increase, thus enhancing the local economy.
With the initiative showing great opportunities, the EU has already announced further support. "Through such initiatives, we see how EU support contributes to a better standard of living for the citizens of Serbia,” explained EU Ambassador to Serbia Emanuele Giaufre.
“I am glad that we will help the development of tourism, waste management, social inclusion, and the improvement of education,” he added.
The EU PRO Plus programme used a specially designed local approach to help different areas in Serbia develop. This helped create 12 plans for these areas, with each project designed to solve the specific needs of each community.
UNOPS involvement has been crucial in ensuring these projects are well-prepared and successfully implemented. The collaboration with local governments, regional development agencies, and numerous stakeholders has been key to the initiative's success.
"Our role was to facilitate the development process, ensure transparency, efficiency and inclusiveness, and we remain dedicated to this important task in the future as well," said Head of Programme of the UNOPS Serbia Multi-Country Office, Marko Vujačić.
This initiative is a significant step towards sustainable development and improved living standards in Serbia. Through strategic projects and collaborative efforts, UNOPS continues to facilitate transparency, efficiency, and inclusiveness, contributing to Serbia's European integration and the overall standard of life for communities in Serbia.
