Supporting social cohesion through sports in Ethiopia
UNOPS worked with the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation to renovate a multi-sport field in Addis Ababa's Bela neighbourhood.
Sports have the potential to bring people and communities together, providing significant social value.
Using funding from the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation, UNOPS renovated a multi-sport field in the Bela area of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The field was renovated with gender sensitivity and accessibility considerations in mind.
Sports bring people together as a way to not only encourage physical activities but also contribute to attaining specific development and peace objectives.
The multi-sport field will contribute to providing healthy activities for the local community. It will also provide the community with the chance to come together and discuss various social, economic and environmental issues in a consultative and participatory manner.
“Thanks to this intervention, we are crucially contributing to the development of a better and healthier environment for all the users of the multi-sport field, producing an immediate positive impact on the quality of life of Bela’s residents," said H.E. Agostino Palese Italy's Ambassador to Ethiopia.
