Supporting access to quality education in Niger
UNOPS worked in partnership with the government of Niger and the World Bank to improve the quality of teaching and learning environments across the country
Niger's education system is heavily impacted by demographic pressure and limited resources. This has severely affected access to and completion of primary education, with low school enrollment rates and high drop-out rates.
The 'Learning improvement for results in education (LIRE) Niger' project is supporting the government of Niger as it works to improve access to education, increase the quality of teaching and learning environments, and strengthen education planning and management.
As part of the project, UNOPS procured 7,000 tablets and 7,000 solar power banks, which will help improve teaching practices and classroom pedagogy, promoting learning for girls and boys across Niger.
This equipment [...] is an important lever for the digital revolution in Niger's education system and an essential step towards sustainable and inclusive development.
UNOPS saved around $1.5 million on the procurement process for the tablets and solar power banks – savings that were used to provide even more tablets than originally requested to teachers and children in school.
Each tablet comes fully equipped with a waterproof solar power bank to ensure that educational instruction can continue even in the event of an emergency that results in a loss of power. UNOPS will also provide training on the use of tablets to 300 trainers.
"Teachers will now have access to modern tools to enrich their teaching while students will benefit from a more interactive, technology-driven education," said Idi Abdou, Deputy Secretary General of the Ministry of National Education of Niger.
