Ethiopia's healthcare system faces significant challenges, including limited access to quality services, persistent gaps in infrastructure, and shortages of essential medicines and supplies.

A $1.8 million agreement between the Ministry of Health and UNOPS will fund the modernization and upgrade of cold storage and freezer facilities, ensuring a more reliable and efficient supply of blood products nationwide. The initiative is critical for improving access to safe blood supplies in both urban centres and remote areas, bolstering Ethiopia's ability to respond to medical emergencies and effectively meet patient needs.

"This project not only strengthens the country’s healthcare infrastructure but also ensures that lifesaving blood products are available where they are needed most,” said Worknesh Mekonnen, Director of UNOPS Horn of Africa Multi-Country Office.

Beyond infrastructure improvements, the project will help strengthen local capacity. Specialized training programmes will equip staff with the skills necessary to operate and maintain the new storage systems. The integration of the latest technologies and best practices in blood storage further underscores a commitment to innovation within Ethiopia’s healthcare sector.

Key components of the project include assessment, design, procurement, installation, modification, testing, commissioning and the final handover of advanced cold room facilities. These enhancements will meet international quality and safety standards and be strategically implemented in key locations to address regional demands and improve healthcare service delivery nationwide.
