The United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS)
Statement by UNOPS on the passing of Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin
UNOPS Deputy Executive Director delivered a statement on behalf of UNOPS Executive Director, Grete Faremo, to Executive Board Members in New York today.
It was with shock and sadness that I heard of the sudden and untimely passing of our dear colleague and a great UN leader, Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin.
He was a close friend, confidant and mentor to many of us here.
I last saw him only some weeks ago in Washington, and he was his usual gracious self. His absence this week is strongly felt.
I would like to offer my condolences, on behalf of UNOPS, to Dr. Babatunde's family and his many friends and admirers in Nigeria, New York and around the world.
My thoughts are also with his colleagues at UNFPA. The organization has lost a visionary leader. It will be next to impossible to fill the void.
At this time, it is important for us to remember the tremendous contribution Dr. Babatunde made to the health of women and girls, and to human rights.
Dr. Babatunde's enthusiasm and collaborative spirit must remind us that we should not allow the dawn of a sad day to slip uselessly away. We have to move forward and continue with our important work together.
At this time, let us give thanks to Dr. Babatunde for his dedication, hard work and inspiration.
Thank you.
