Promoting sustainable public transport in Ecuador
New electric trolleybuses will help make Quito’s urban transport network more sustainable – improving the quality of life of the population and supporting the country's commitments to climate action.
In Ecuador's densely populated capital of Quito, the trolleybus network is one of the most widely utilized transportation services – offering affordable transportation to daily commuters. But the outdated fleet of diesel and hybrid-powered vehicles is highly polluting, which – at the city’s altitude – affects residents' health, impacts the quality of urban life and adds to national greenhouse gas emissions .
In partnership with the Municipal Public Passenger Transport Company of Quito (EPMTPQ), UNOPS is procuring 60 new electric trolleybuses. The electric trolleybuses will help to reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from the public transportation network and improve urban mobility in the capital – all while supporting Ecuador’s commitments to advancing climate action and sustainable development.
We are proud to provide Ecuador with clean public transportation to reduce environmental impact and support the country’s mitigation and adaptation efforts.
The fully electric-powered vehicles are designed to adapt to the existing infrastructure and the city’s slopes, without losing efficiency. Each vehicle can transport up to 160 passengers and has a backup battery for emergencies. Disability- and gender- inclusive considerations have been integrated into the vehicles. This includes having dedicated areas for passengers with reduced mobility and accommodating people who use wheelchairs and people with baby strollers. There is also space for bicycles and the vehicles will also be fitted with security cameras and other features that will help make the journey safer for commuters.
“Through UNOPS efficient and transparent procurement, we saved money, which allowed the purchase of 10 additional trolleybuses for the city. Soon, we will have more modern, high-quality and clean transportation at the service of Quito residents,” said Xavier Vásquez, Manager of EPMTPQ.
The new trolleybuses are also equipped with regenerative braking, which reduces energy consumption by up to 30 per cent – ensuring sustainable and resilient transportation.
