Increasing food security and improving food system resilience in Sierra Leone
UNOPS is working with Sierra Leone's Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security to build a national food reserve storage and a solar-powered irrigation system.
Implementing the project on behalf of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, UNOPS will construct 4,000 metric tonnes of silo storage as well as procure and install a solar-powered irrigation system that will provide energy for vegetable gardens.
The project will help enhance partnerships with smallholder farmers to increase local food production. It will also help reduce the country's dependence on food imports, reduce hunger, create livelihood opportunities and build a resilient food system.
The new project will support the World Bank-funded Food System Resilience Programme as well as Sierra Leone's Feed Salone Strategy, which aims to significantly boost gross domestic product growth through agriculture.
