Thousands of Peruvians still lack access to essential healthcare services. Long waiting times and gaps in health infrastructure put vulnerable communities at risk. In the Amazonas region, people often have to travel long distances to seek medical attention.

To help, UNOPS has signed a new agreement with the regional government of Amazonas to strengthen the provision of public healthcare through the construction and equipment of the Santiago Apóstol Hospital in the province of Utcubamba.

We are proud to accompany the regional government of Amazonas in this important project that will provide quality healthcare services to thousands of people in the Amazonas region.

“The hospital will also contribute to the reduction of travel times and costs for patients who previously had to be referred to other health centres in the region and to the capital,” she added.

Patients will be able to seek emergency health services and outpatient consultations. The hospital will include a sterilization centre and a surgical centre, among other essential services.

“The construction of this hospital [...] becomes a reality that will transform the lives of thousands of families [and] improve the quality of medical care and raise health standards in our region,” said Gilmer Horna, Governor of the Amazonas region.

With UNOPS extensive experience in health infrastructure globally and in Latin America, the hospital will be built with sustainable construction material and equipped with energy efficient technologies. Health personnel will also be trained to make the most of the new facilities and equipment to ensure long-term sustainable development.
