Clearing the path for a mine-free future in Afghanistan
With funding from the government of Japan, UNOPS is helping returnees rebuild their lives by removing explosive threats and restoring community infrastructure.
Across Afghanistan, communities face daily risks from explosive ordnance left behind by decades of conflict. For families returning to their communities after displacement, these hidden dangers can make everyday activities – like walking to school or farming land, life-threatening. At the same time, damaged infrastructure and limited job opportunities stand in the way of recovery.
To help communities overcome these challenges, UNOPS is working with the government of Japan to clear explosive hazards from priority areas. The project will enable the safe delivery of essential community infrastructure and generate new opportunities for work – creating the conditions for people to return and rebuild.
A safe and secure future means communities not only survive but flourish. That’s the very heart of this project. Through years of collaboration with UNOPS, we’ve supported those seeking to rebuild lives fractured by conflict. Clearing explosive threats isn’t just a technical task, it’s a pathway home for those wanting to return, rebuild, and begin again.
The project is a comprehensive response to a complex crisis. Mine action saves lives and unlocks access to land, resources and public services. UNOPS will also implement community-based livelihood projects, to support the long-term recovery of Afghan communities.
"Afghan communities have shown extraordinary resilience through decades of hardship. UNOPS has stood beside them, not only clearing the dangers of the past, but helping lay the groundwork for a safer, more hopeful future," said Nick Gardner, Country Director, UNOPS Afghanistan.
UNOPS peace and security experts also provide technical support, advising on mine action operations, project design and procurement.
“Through its integrated approach, UNOPS and our partners are not just saving lives but laying the foundation for long-term recovery, dignity and hope in Afghanistan’s most affected areas,” said Émilie Potvin, Director of UNOPS Global Portfolios.
“By clearing land of explosives and restoring essential services, this project empowers people to return home with confidence. It enables children to attend school without fear, families to cultivate their land safely, and communities to rebuild stronger, more resilient futures,” she added.
