Building brighter futures in rural Ethiopia
The construction of new school facilities will help improve access to education and foster socio-economic development in Ethiopia’s Gurage and West Shewa Zone.
The Gurage Zone in the Central Ethiopia Region State and the West Shewa Zone in the Oromia Region face significant development challenges, including limited access to quality education. Schools currently face overcrowded classrooms, unsafe infrastructure and inadequate sanitation facilities.
To help improve education opportunities in both regions, UNOPS and the government of Italy have signed a €4.2 million agreement to construct new, modern school facilities. The schools will be climate-resilient and equipped with classrooms, libraries, administrative spaces as well as water, sanitation and hygiene facilities, to safeguard the health and well-being of students and staff. Qualified teachers will be recruited, trained and deployed to the new classrooms.
“By investing in education, particularly in regions like Gurage Zone and West Shewa Zone, we aim to empower communities, bridge inequalities and build a foundation for a brighter future,” said the Italian Ambassador to Ethiopia, Agostino Palese.
“Education is a catalyst for socio-economic transformation, and we are proud to partner with UNOPS in realizing this shared vision for Ethiopia's youth and future,” he added.
Over 4,000 students and their families are expected to benefit from the project, fostering socio-economic development and enabling brighter futures for those living in underserved areas. Efforts are being made to reach out-of-school children, including improving transportation and technology access to bring education closer to marginalized communities.
Worknesh Mekonnen, Director of UNOPS Horn of Africa Multi-Country Office said: "This project demonstrates the strong commitment of the government of Italy to reducing disparities and promoting inclusive development. It marks a significant milestone in our efforts to empower communities through education.”
“By investing in these regions, we aim to break the cycle of poverty and create opportunities for the next generation,” she added.
