Albania's newly renovated Ethnographic Museum of Kruja opens its doors to the public
Renovated as part of the UNOPS-implemented, European Union-funded EU4Culture Programme, the museum is helping preserve Albania's cultural heritage.
The Ethnographic Museum of Kruja is one of Albania's most important cultural heritage sites. Damaged by an earthquake in 2019, the museum has now been restored.
Using €850,000 in funding from the European Union, UNOPS worked in close partnership with the Ministry of Economy, Culture and Innovation to transform the museum into a modern cultural and educational space.
It offers visitors a unique learning experience focused on Albania's rich history and culture using storytelling and multimedia displays, including interactive walls, virtual and augmented reality experiences such as a virtual dressing room that allows visitors to try on traditional 18th-century clothing), and audio guides.
Working closely with top national and international scholars, EU4Culture experts carefully selected and conserved artefacts and reconceptualized the museum displays to make history more accessible and interesting to visitors.
"EU4Culture is not just about renovating buildings or exhibiting artefacts. It’s about showcasing Albania’s cultural identity. When we know who we are and where we come from, we are not afraid of diversity, of other cultures and traditions," said European Union Ambassador to Albania Silvio Gonzato. "That is why through this museum, and the EU4Culture programme, we are not just preserving the Albanian heritage, but also promoting a more inclusive society."
This museum will not only touch the lives of Albanian visitors but will also increase Albania's international tourism potential, boosting the local economy and creating income opportunities for the local community.
"I am certain that complete reconceptualization of this space, new ways to display the artefacts, along with the addition of interactive elements, will increase the fascinating power that this museum has, offering a unique and unforgettable experience for everyone," said Minister of Economy, Culture and Innovation Blendi Gonxhja.
The Ethnographic Museum in Kruja is an important cultural heritage site for understanding Albania's rich culture and the customs and traditions passed down through generations. The museum provides visitors with a unique opportunity to glimpse into the daily lives of past generations, their routines, family celebrations and other important events.
