Agriculture and infrastructure: supporting the Government of Paraguay
Under-Secretary-General Grete Faremo conducts official visit to discuss supporting the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
The visit included meetings with the President of Paraguay Mr. Horacio Cartes, a number of senior officials from the Government, and respective partners such as Itaipu Binacional – one of the world’s largest generators of renewable energy.
Topics for discussion included a range of support including infrastructure and supporting poverty reduction and social development.
Since 2014, UNOPS has supported Government of Paraguay initiatives to modernize family farming with a range of services — contracting modern tools and machinery to support land cultivation, procuring agricultural supplies, monitoring work and managing related projects.
“We are proud to be supporting the government in its efforts to modernize agriculture across the country, to help tens of thousands of people, and are committed to supporting the Government as it strives to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals,” stated Ms. Faremo.
So far, projects have helped more than 30,000 families (nearly 120,000 people). The work has strengthened food security and livelihoods of many women, men and children in Paraguay.
