UNOPS has been providing support to the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) since 2011 and established a country office in Vientiane in 2017. 

UNOPS works in the areas of health and good governance by providing support in procurement, sustainable infrastructure and project management in the country.

Key Information

  • UNOPS impact in Lao PDR

    • Strengthening the capacity of the Lao Department of Customs to improve border control management against illegal transboundary activities.
    • Through the rehabilitation of Mittaphab Hospital which serves over 110,000 patients every year, UNOPS has helped enhance the healthcare system and quality of medical services in the country.
    • Expanding malaria services nationwide through public health facilities and public-private partnerships. Ensuring access for remote and at-risk populations with the help of volunteer malaria workers, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and civil society. From 2014 to 2023, over 3.3 million insecticide-treated bed nets were distributed, 4.7 million tests were conducted and 99,816 cases treated.
    • The procurement of medical and laboratory equipment benefitted more than 38,500 patients, doctors and medical personnel in Vientiane, Luang Prabang, Champasak and Savannakhet provinces – strengthening the overall COVID-19 response in Lao PDR.
