UNOPS can provide comprehensive support to health sector partners operating in some of the world’s most challenging environments.

Partners rely on UNOPS to help their projects succeed by providing implementation support services that reduce risks; improve speed, quality or cost-effectiveness, and allow our partners to focus on their policy-oriented mandates and core competencies.

In support of the Millennium Development Goals, UNOPS can provide partners with services including:

UNOPS health sector partners include the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, Malaria (GFATM), the Three Disease Fund, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the World Bank, the World Health Organization and many national governments.

Procuring medical supplies and equipment

With extensive experience in the medical sector, Long-term Agreements with suppliers and significant buying power, UNOPS can acquire medical supplies for clients swiftly and cost-effectively. Upon request UNOPS helps partners define technical specifications and plans and implements comprehensive quality control measures. By adhering to internationally recognized standards UNOPS guarantees transparency and integrity in all transactions.

Procurement of ambulances in PeruWith funding from GFATM, the Governments of India, the United Kingdom and the World Bank, UNOPS supplied millions of diagnostic kits for HIV, hepatitis, hepatitis C and malaria to Indian health programmes. It also obtains millions of doses of HIV/AIDS drugs, tuberculosis vaccinations and other essential medicines on behalf of the Indian Government.

UNOPS assisted the Government of Peru in the procurement of medical equipment, vehicles and constructed hospitalsfor the national health insurer EsSalud. UNOPS has also procured ambulances for partners including the Governments of Argentina and India. UNOPS procured drugs and equipment for medical facilities in Prishtina/Pristina and Mitrovicë/Mitrovica, Kosovo.

Partnering with supply-chain management providers

On behalf of WHO, UNOPS is shipping and distributing large volumes of H1N1 vaccines and ancillary products, such as such as AD syringes and cold boxes, donated by manufactures. The materials are being distributed in developing countries selected by WHO.

Health infrastructure

UNOPS can support health sector partners in the construction of hospitals, clinics, laboratories and warehousing facilities. UNOPS has extensive operational experience with physical infrastructure in some of the world’s most challenging environments.

On behalf of UNICEF, World Vision and national governments, UNOPS designed, constructed and rehabilitated more than 100 health centres in countries affected by the Indian Ocean tsunami of December 2004. In Kosovo, UNOPS repaired a university clinic in Prishtina/Pristina and rehabilitated the Emergency Cardiology Centre in Mitrovicë/Mitrovica.

Managing health funds

UNOPS helps advance United Nations Millennium Development Goal 6, targeting reduced prevalence of HIV and AIDS, malaria and other diseases. As the Local Fund Agent for The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM) in Azerbaijan, China, India, Kosovo, Macedonia, Mongolia, Serbia and Tunisia, UNOPS administers programme funds, ensuring that disbursements reach intended beneficiaries and providing ongoing analysis of financial and project results.

UNOPS acts as fund manager for the Three Diseases Fund (3DF) in Myanmar, where it has administered more than $100 million over five years. The European Commission and the Governments of Australia, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the United Kingdom contributed to this pooled fund. This programme provides a simple and transparent instrument to finance nationwide efforts to reduce the transmission of HIV and AIDS, TB and malaria, and enhance care and treatment through access to essential drugs and related services.

Training and capacity development

Norway India Partnership Initiative, seeking a two-third reduction in global mortality rate of children under fiveCapacity development is a vital component of health sector programmes, helping deliver sustainability and ensuring the broadest possible impact.

In Iraq, Ministry of Health officials were trained in emergency health care, while workshops on trauma therapy were held for social workers and health professionals. Thousands of health personnel were trained in tuberculosis management and malaria control as part of the Three Diseases Fund in Myanmar.

UNOPS also helped provide training for medical and paramedic staff in Kosovo. In India, child health managers were trained as part of the Norway India Partnership Initiative, a project which seeks a two-thirds reduction in global mortality rate of children under five. On behalf of UNFPA, UNOPS trained 6,000 personnel in health-related disciplines in Sri Lanka during relief operations after the 2004 tsunami.
